FIFTIES FILM FESTIVAL PROGRAMME

Posted on

If you are planning coming to one some or all of the five films on Thursday, here is a guide to what you can expect. A programme will be available at the door for anyone interested in the stories behind these films.

A slice of life and entertainment in Britain 70 years ago, all these films came out in 1952 or 1953.

If you are coming – and you want to be comfortable, bring a cushion! We have upgraded our sound and projector, but we have retained our seats!

Remember, seats are free, and ices will be on sale in the intervals.

PETER PAN

A classic of traditional animation [and from a thoroughly British story], Peter Pan continues to enchant. Starting at 1.10pm, it’s our first movie, and is aimed at children of all ages.

THE TITFIELD THUNDERBOLT

Set in the sleepy English village of Titfield, the inhabitants wake up one morning to discover that British Railways are closing their branch line, and handing transport over to a coach firm. There follows a determined fight to keep the trains running.. Starting at 2.35 pm, this Ealing comedy, shot in colour, is a delight.

THE CRUEL SEA

Afternoons were once about westerns and war films, so here is one of the greatest. The Cruel Sea is heroic and gripping, and offers a realistic and uplifting story of the Battle of the Atlantic, back in the Forties. Starting at 4.20 pm, and not 2.20 as on the poster.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST

One of Oscar Wilde’s funniest plays, and deservedly a classic film, with high octane performances all round, including from the famous handbag. The important thing to remember is that it will start around 6.40 pm

FROM HERE TO ETERNITY

The famous beach scene is a classic, and is one of many reasons why From Here to Eternity is one of the great romantic films of all time, as well as being a good example of how to weave real history [the attack on Pearl Harbour] into a love story, and vice versa. Our final film starts at 8.35 pm

FULL SUPPORTING PROGRAMME

As well as ices, we will be offering film treats between each film. Cartoons, newsreels, memories – we hope to have all on show during the festival. Hope to see you there!
