ALEC BOOKLESS – A MEMORIAL
The Parish Council recently planted a birch tree on the Common, to honour the memory of Alec Bookless, who played a big role in the village, all his life.
Below, Peter Calder pays tribute.
In memory of Alec Bookless 1935-2019
Good Lowick citizen. Garage owner. Golfer.
Alec came to Lowick from Newcastle in 1958 when he bought Robinson’s garage. In 1959 he married Margaret, a marriage that lasted 60 years. Bookless Motors became a successful business repairing agricultural machinery and cars, contracting combines at harvest time and selling all manner of useful items from a well-stocked store room and fuel from the roadside pumps.
He was a member of Lowick parish council for 30 years and chairman for many of those.
A keen golfer and one time captain of Goswick he enjoyed recounting his exploits on the links to the many who visited the garage where a friendly welcome, news, gossip and excellent workmanship were all part of the service.
